'Twas The Week Before Break!!

Dear 1C Families,

We have finally made it to the week before break. The students are very excited and can't wait for a well deserved rest. We are working hard up until the very end as this week will mark the end of the first full semester of the school year! Hard to believe. It's going by so fast!

We continue to work and also, do some formal assessments. I am finishing up my DIBELS testing for the second benchmark. We took a Spalding assessment and I will have those results available to you during conferences. Tomorrow we will be taking a formal phonogram test over the 70 phonograms that they have learned. More information will be provided below regarding homework.

We have taken a rest from Frog and toad this week and are reading wonderful little stories, which have an important lesson to be learned. We will start back up with Frog and Toad after the break.

We are learning about the early American Settlers and the first thirteen colonies, in history. We are learning about the amazing body systems and making "wearable" body parts such as the hand, a brain cap, etc. We will save all of them until we have finished our unit on the human body so that they can wear all of them at once.

Conferences will be after break on  Tuesday, January 3, and Wednesday, January 4. Each day the conference times will from 9-2. Mrs. Aberouette has sent out a sign-up genius for conferences. If you have not already chosen a slot, please select one so that we can discuss your student's progress.

We are very excited as we will be having a Snow Queen celebration this Friday, December 16. Mrs. Aberouette and the other classroom moms have planned exciting activities for this day. All of first grade will be participating. She has also sent out sign ups for this event, as well. If you wish to participate please let her know or sign up using the sign up genius she sent out.

We did not have homework last night. This was a mistake and I apologize. There was a bit of confusion. Although we do not have a spelling test this week we will still have homework tonight and tomorrow night.

Tonight's (Tuesday) homework will consist of math, grammar and a practice phonogram quiz. We took a practice quiz this morning but we want to give them time to prepare tonight. Our formal phonogram quiz will be tomorrow. If you have phonogram cards or the app then we will be testing over the first 70 phonograms. We have been studying parts of speech in class, beginning with nouns. Tonight's homework will include a sheet on plural nouns.

Tomorrow's (Wednesday) will be a math sheet and a grammar sheet reviewing nouns.

We will be taking a practice graph test in math today (Tuesday) and the formal test will be tomorrow (Wednesday). We have finished the first workbook and your students will be bringing it home.

THERE WILL NOT BE ANY HOMEWORK over Winter Break. The only assignment that the student's have is their animal research project.

I will be checking my email on Friday, December 16 at 3pm. This is the last time I will be checking this week. I will not be checking or answering any emails over the break. Anything sent to me during this time will be read and answered on Tuesday, January 3.

If you have any questions regarding any of the sign-ups please contact Mrs. Aberouette at
kaberouette@yahoo.com

On behalf of myself and Mrs. DeMeese we wish you, your students and your families a wonderful, peaceful and restful break.

Field Trip Week!

Hello 1C Parents,

We are so close to Winter Break and the students can feel it!! They have worked so hard this first semester and I am so proud of them. I have seen them grow and change in the short, almost, five months we've been together. It always amazes me how fast they grow. They're starting to look and act like second graders.

This week is very exciting for first grade as we are going to see a production of The Snow Queen. The theatre was kind enough to send us a beautiful book of The Snow Queen to read to the students before they see the play. They have enjoyed the story so much and we will end it tomorrow right before we board the bus. This gives them some background and affords them a better understanding of what is happening in the play. It should be a wonderful experience!

We continue to read Frog and Toad Are Friends and the students are loving the stories. If you have the opportunity, ask your student about the chapter titled, The Story. They were laughing so hard during that chapter. We were all laughing and couldn't stop. I'm so glad they are enjoying this special series.

We are diving into Early Settlers in history and the human body in science. These units will take us into the New Year. We just started our math unit on graphs. This unit will complete the first workbook. We will begin the second after the break. Time is flying!!

Conferences will be held Tuesday, January 3rd and Wednesday, January 4th. Mrs. Aberouette sent out a sign up genius this morning. Please visit this sign up and choose a spot.

We will not have spelling homework tomorrow; only math. Our spelling list
is short this week, only 20 words.

Please see some important dates below and the phonograms for this week.

Back to School!

Hello 1C Families,

I hope that all of you had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving break and had the opportunity for some much needed downtime and fun!

With only three weeks left in this quarter (and semester!!) we will be hard at work as we finish the year strong.

I cannot believe it, but we will be completing our Singapore 1A Workbooks in a couple of weeks! We have just finished measurement and will be closing this quarter with graphing and charts. This is always a fun unit for the students as we can graph and chart almost anything. We will be reviewing some of the concepts that we have learned this semester, as well as some basics such as odd/even, number sequence, etc. Although, these concepts seem easy, it is important that we revisit these often in the younger years, so that they are solidified and easily accessible as they are faced with more complex operations later on.

We have started Frog and Toad and the children are enjoying it. If you haven't already, please send this piece of literature in so that we can read together, as a class. We have a literature/comprehension packet to go along with it and we will be completing it as we read.

We are still wrapping up the Food Chain in science and Ancient Civilizations in history. We are very excited as we will be moving into the study of the human body in science and our history studies will take us to Colonial America. We have a lot of fun things planned for these exciting units.

Please be sure to check your child's folder tonight as I sent home their materials for Project Week. I sent it home a little early so they are able to get a jump start. The packet contained three sheets of paper with a paper clip. Included were the instructions, grading rubric, and actual report questions. Also attached was their animal they are to report. Your student chose their animal, randomly, out of a jar. Everyone seemed to be happy with their pick. I explained to them that even if they wanted something else, they may find their new animal very interesting once they start their research. That is why we are always learning new things. We never know what wonderful things we might discover. If you have questions about this or need any clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me. I'm looking forward to learning all about their animals!!

We are very excited and looking forward to our first field trip to see The Snow Queen performance on Dec. 6th. An email was sent home last week with information and instructions to sign up your child for the trip. I need a total of four parent volunteers to ride with us on the bus. I have received several emails from those interested. I will be putting names into a hat and picking four. If you would still like to ride on the bus please email by noon tomorrow as I need to draw names by tomorrow afternoon. Please note that if you will be joining us on the bus you do need to have a fingerprint clearance. If you are just meeting us there, at the performance, no clearance is needed. Also, if you do plan to meet us there, please let me know so that your child is able to see you!

Quarter two conferences are just around the corner. A sign up will be going out December 5th. Please be on the lookout for this.

You might notice a lull in the amount of classwork your child brings home over the next couple of weeks. This is because I am compiling work samples to show during conferences. We will still be sending home spelling and math tests. All other work, unless it's a craft, will be kept in their blue folders and organized for conference time.

We have our class Spelling Bee winners!
First Place went to Julia Lanza and runner-up went to Beatrix Nance. Congratulations!! They will now move forward and compete with other classes, our school and other academies. Miss Pape is heading up our Spelling Bee so if you have questions please direct them to her. We do have a class full of great spellers!!!

I want to give a huge thanks to the parent volunteers who helped with our friendship chain and small celebration before Thanksgiving. To Mrs. Aberouette for cutting and preparing the materials and to Mrs. Wilson, Ms. Pixler and Mrs. Rahimi for volunteering to help with our little celebration.
Many thanks to all of you. You are appreciated!!!

Below are the phonograms for this week. I hope your (almost) December is off to a wonderful and festive beginning!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear 1C Parents,

I cannot believe that our Thanksgiving Break is almost upon us!

I want to congratulate our class and the entire first grade for a wonderful music performance at our fall concert. The students sounded so joyful and did an amazing job. I was so proud of them. I hope that you enjoyed the show. Looking forward to the next!

This week will be a very short one, as we only have school on
Monday and Tuesday. Due to our shortened week, our curriculum
will be slightly different. We will NOT have any spelling words or
phonograms this week and there will not be math homework. In lieu
of a spelling test we will be completing "phonogram finds" where the students
are given a passage and we go through and find all of the two or more letter phonograms. We will also be playing phonogram bingo. They loved this the last time we played and I'm sure we will be playing many games. We will be starting Frog and Toad in literature, so if your student has not brought it into class yet, please do so. Until then, they can share. We will continue to work on our Food Chain booklet in science and will talk about Christopher Columbus tomorrow and the first Thanksgiving in history.

On Tuesday we will be celebrating our virtue of friendship, just as they did many, many years ago, on the first Thanksgiving. We have a couple of crafts planned. I will read a story and poem about the first Thanksgiving and if the weather cooperates we will go out on our field and have a special snack and celebrate our classroom community. I am going to provide the snack. It will be cookies and apple juice. I have taken a picture of the type of cookie I will be providing. They are Lofthouse and I have used them several times in my former classes, as they are completely nut free and are not manufactured in a factory where nut contamination is a possibility. So they are safe for children with any nut allergies. If your child has any other type of allergy then please send a special snack with them to school, that day, if you so choose. If your child CANNOT have the cookie I will be providing, please let me know in an email, so that I can be certain he/she does not get one.

I will not be checking email during the break. I will do my last email check at 3:30 on Tuesday afternoon. Any emails sent after this time will be read and responded to, when we return to school on Monday, November 28.

I want to wish all of you and your families a wonderful and restful break filled with love, friendship and warm memories. I also want to give THANKS to you, for allowing me the wonderful privilege of teaching your children. It is great honor and one that I never take lightly. They are all wonderful scholars and each adds something special to our classroom community. Enjoy your break!

Warmly,
Ms. Smedegaard and Mrs. DeMeese

Concert Week!!!

Hello 1C Families,

We are so excited that our fall music concert will be this week!! Your students have been working so hard and it's been a lot of fun to watch as they have learned, practiced and are now performing. It will be a wonderful concert and I can't wait to watch them. I've copied and pasted the concert details, from Mrs. Boswell's blog. Please take note of the important information for concert night.

Our MANDATORY Music Concert for the first semester is a week from today!!

When – Thursday, November 17th at 5:30 PM

Where – Archway Lincoln Gym

Call Time – 5 PM (All students should report to their classrooms)

Please follow the morning drop off procedure the night of the concert.
Teaching Assistants will be curb-side to help students exit their cars and make their way to the classrooms. Students will be able to get a quick drink and have a bathroom break before lining up to walk to the gym with their teachers.

After each grade level performs, they will exit to their classrooms.

Please wait until each grade (K-2) has performed to pick up your child.

All the K-2 students have been working hard to learn their music and they deserve a full audience. At the end of the K-2 concert, you may pick up your child from their classroom. If you have older students, please pick up your K-2 child so that they may sit with you during the 3-5 concert.

Dress Code for Concerts:

Girls must wear a white collared shirt, black skirt (knee length or longer) with or dress slacks, and black dress shoes (black tights if desired).

Boys must wear a white collared, button-down shirt, black slacks, black socks and black dress shoes.

The students will be wearing the same attire for the Spring Concert in April.

Some stores that carry appropriate concert attire:

o     Macy’s
o     JCPenney
o     Sears
o     Kohl’s
o     Target
o     Walmart
o     Lands’ End (landsend.com)
o     Shopstyle.com

Your students have been working hard! They are very excited to show off for you.

We have finished our unit on Fairy Tales and the students took their booklets home today. Our next Literature selection will be Frog and Toad. Please send this in with your student as we will begin at the end of the week.
We have started to write more, in class, and for morning work they are now using their journals to write off of a prompt that I give to them. Each morning when they enter the room there is a writing prompt on the board that consists of a character, setting and a simple plot. They can write anything they like, as long as their story uses these three elements. They can then draw a picture to go with their story. The class seems to really enjoy this "free writing" and it expands their knowledge of writing and vocabulary as well as spelling.

We completed our very short math unit on shapes/geometry. We will begin measurement this week.

The Food Chain is being studied in science and we are diving deeper into ancient civilizations such as the Aztecs, Maya and Inca, in history.

We will be celebrating our virtue of Friendship on Tuesday, November 22. Mrs. Aberouette will be sending out the specifics and sign-ups for volunteers.

    Below are this week's phonograms.

    Have a wonderful week!

Short Week!!

Hello 1C Families,

Welcome to the short week! Days will be going fast as we approach the middle of the second quarter. It's hard to believe that we are almost at the halfway mark.

We are still hard at work. We started our geometry unit in math today. After grading the math tests from the last unit the students did fairly well. The class average was 78%. I know that there were some difficult concepts to grasp, such as making tens and using them to add and subtract. Singapore builds each year. The students were introduced to this concept and will build on it as they move up through the grades. We will touch on it again, later this year.

We continue to study Mexico and will build as we concentrate on the Maya, Inca and Aztec civilizations. The students had a wonderful time drawing their life-size sharks. They were put into random groups and did a very good job working cooperatively. We will hopefully be finishing these up this week.

We continue to read fairy tales and the students never seem to tire of them. They enjoy comparing and contrasting the stories we have read using the element of a fairy tale.

We will still have a spelling test but our list will be shortened due to the Friday holiday.

We are planning a special celebration for the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break. Please be on the look out for an email form Mrs. Aberouette regarding details and sign-ups.

Performance Reports will be going out next week. If your child does receive one, please do not be alarmed. This is a just a call to regroup and discuss how we can make positive steps forward so that your student can finish out the quarter strong.

Please check your child's green folder for an important notice from our nurse. It is printed on green paper. It is extremely crucial that you read and follow. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.

Below are this week's phonograms and a few reminders.

Enjoy your long weekend!!

Week 2 of Quarter 2

Dear 1C Families,

So sorry for the late Blog update. As stated in my letter to you last week, myself and my family have been battling a very bad stomach flu. I hope this update finds you healthy! It is that time of year and we are fighting germs, germs and more germs. Please remind your children to practice good hand washing while at school. I Lysol the room at the end of each day but we can use all of the help we can get this time of year!

This week we are finishing up our unit on subtraction and addition. We will be taking a practice test on Thursday and the final test will be on Friday. I know that some of the concepts such as using the "making ten" concept while subtracting is a little tough for the students to understand but they are getting there and understanding it more and more. It is a concept that will develop more over the next few years of Singapore math.

We continue to read our Fairy Tales and compare and contrast the elements that these stories contain. In science we will start our reports on sharks. Students will be put into groups and each group will study a particular type of shark and compose a short report in conjunction with making and painting a large cut out of their shark. We are very excited to start this process so that the students can learn how to work cooperatively in a group. We completed our short unit on World Religions and have started our unit on Mexico. We have a lot of fun information to share and learn about our neighbors to the south!

Our fall music concert is fast approaching. Please visit Mrs. Boswell's Blog for more information on this exciting event. You can access her Blog via the school website. The children have been working and practicing very hard and I am very excited to see them perform!

Book bags will resume this Friday. Due to our literary character festivities last Friday and my absence from school, we did not send them home. These bags will only be going home on Fridays and they may be returned anytime before the following Friday.

Wishing everyone a wonderful and healthy, rest of the week!
