'Twas The Week Before Break!!

Dear 1C Families,

We have finally made it to the week before break. The students are very excited and can't wait for a well deserved rest. We are working hard up until the very end as this week will mark the end of the first full semester of the school year! Hard to believe. It's going by so fast!

We continue to work and also, do some formal assessments. I am finishing up my DIBELS testing for the second benchmark. We took a Spalding assessment and I will have those results available to you during conferences. Tomorrow we will be taking a formal phonogram test over the 70 phonograms that they have learned. More information will be provided below regarding homework.

We have taken a rest from Frog and toad this week and are reading wonderful little stories, which have an important lesson to be learned. We will start back up with Frog and Toad after the break.

We are learning about the early American Settlers and the first thirteen colonies, in history. We are learning about the amazing body systems and making "wearable" body parts such as the hand, a brain cap, etc. We will save all of them until we have finished our unit on the human body so that they can wear all of them at once.

Conferences will be after break on  Tuesday, January 3, and Wednesday, January 4. Each day the conference times will from 9-2. Mrs. Aberouette has sent out a sign-up genius for conferences. If you have not already chosen a slot, please select one so that we can discuss your student's progress.

We are very excited as we will be having a Snow Queen celebration this Friday, December 16. Mrs. Aberouette and the other classroom moms have planned exciting activities for this day. All of first grade will be participating. She has also sent out sign ups for this event, as well. If you wish to participate please let her know or sign up using the sign up genius she sent out.

We did not have homework last night. This was a mistake and I apologize. There was a bit of confusion. Although we do not have a spelling test this week we will still have homework tonight and tomorrow night.

Tonight's (Tuesday) homework will consist of math, grammar and a practice phonogram quiz. We took a practice quiz this morning but we want to give them time to prepare tonight. Our formal phonogram quiz will be tomorrow. If you have phonogram cards or the app then we will be testing over the first 70 phonograms. We have been studying parts of speech in class, beginning with nouns. Tonight's homework will include a sheet on plural nouns.

Tomorrow's (Wednesday) will be a math sheet and a grammar sheet reviewing nouns.

We will be taking a practice graph test in math today (Tuesday) and the formal test will be tomorrow (Wednesday). We have finished the first workbook and your students will be bringing it home.

THERE WILL NOT BE ANY HOMEWORK over Winter Break. The only assignment that the student's have is their animal research project.

I will be checking my email on Friday, December 16 at 3pm. This is the last time I will be checking this week. I will not be checking or answering any emails over the break. Anything sent to me during this time will be read and answered on Tuesday, January 3.

If you have any questions regarding any of the sign-ups please contact Mrs. Aberouette at
kaberouette@yahoo.com

On behalf of myself and Mrs. DeMeese we wish you, your students and your families a wonderful, peaceful and restful break.

Field Trip Week!

Hello 1C Parents,

We are so close to Winter Break and the students can feel it!! They have worked so hard this first semester and I am so proud of them. I have seen them grow and change in the short, almost, five months we've been together. It always amazes me how fast they grow. They're starting to look and act like second graders.

This week is very exciting for first grade as we are going to see a production of The Snow Queen. The theatre was kind enough to send us a beautiful book of The Snow Queen to read to the students before they see the play. They have enjoyed the story so much and we will end it tomorrow right before we board the bus. This gives them some background and affords them a better understanding of what is happening in the play. It should be a wonderful experience!

We continue to read Frog and Toad Are Friends and the students are loving the stories. If you have the opportunity, ask your student about the chapter titled, The Story. They were laughing so hard during that chapter. We were all laughing and couldn't stop. I'm so glad they are enjoying this special series.

We are diving into Early Settlers in history and the human body in science. These units will take us into the New Year. We just started our math unit on graphs. This unit will complete the first workbook. We will begin the second after the break. Time is flying!!

Conferences will be held Tuesday, January 3rd and Wednesday, January 4th. Mrs. Aberouette sent out a sign up genius this morning. Please visit this sign up and choose a spot.
